English

From a story to a newspaper article, an advert to a brochure, a poem to a play, at St. Paul’s, we encourage both the reading for pleasure and the writing of a variety of genres by celebrating our heritage of great classic and contemporary authors from all over the world. Children are proud of their writing and present it to high standards with focus on joined handwriting.

Our teaching and learning approach includes challenging and engaging tasks as well as effective collaborations between staff and pupils that creates an amazing range of  celebrations and experiences such as Roald Dahl’s Day, World book Day and World Poetry Day just to name a few.   We want all of our children to recognise that reading is the gateway to all learning and work with them to develop a love of reading and writing for pleasure.  We achieve this by providing them with stimulating learning experiences and by working in partnership with parents and carers.

Our Curriculum provides an exceptional and purposeful English education, which prepares learners in the EYF, KS1 and KS2 to be confident, independent and articulate speakers, readers and writers of the English language.  KS1 pupil's reading journey begins with introducing them to phonics using the Read Write Inc scheme.

The Curriculum map is designed in such a way that children are able to build on their prior learning. Key genres are visited to build an understanding of features and vocabulary. Grammar, spelling and punctuation are regularly taught   and tested across the year groups. Teachers are using the Talk for Writing approach to teach lessons, where the children first discuss the vocabulary, familiarise themselves with the text then learn and act it out and finally create their own stories.
