Celebrating the Holy Year of Mercy at St. Paul's (January 2016) (16 images)

Seeing the great need for mercy and healing in the world, Pope Francis has called for the Year of Mercy. It is a time for the Church across the world to take a year to focus on forgiveness and healing in a special way. The Year of Mercy began with the ritual opening of the Holy Door of Mercy in the Basilica of St. Peter on December 8th 2015. To remind us of the significance of the opening of the Holy Door of Mercy in Rome, we have created our own Holy Door of Mercy at St. Paul’s – by the entrance of the school. This door is a reminder to all who enter our school that God is a God of mercy and that this year is an opportunity to change our lives and to follow more closely the way of living that Jesus modelled for us. Our Holy Door of Mercy was officially blessed by Fr. Perry on the 25th January (the Feast Day of the Conversion of St. Paul). This followed our international-themed mass to celebrate our saint’s Feast Day in the school hall.

Mini Vinnies are seen as having, "the potential to significantly contribute to the future of our Society." This aim also fits in perfectly with the key principles of Catholic Social Teaching which we are teaching at St. Paul’s. Our Mini Vinnies, who are represented by pupils from Years 1 to 6, were presented with their own 'treasured' Prayer, Pledge and Badge in our ceremony. We also had the pleasure of Fr. Perry joining us for our initial meeting on Wednesday 20th January.

To support the running of the homeless shelter at St. Paul the Apostle Church this winter, a selection of our children have been helping to prepare the toiletry bags for the homeless people who have been attending each week. This act provided the children with ‘real life’ experiences of following the teachings of Christ, with regards to looking after those that are less fortunate than ourselves. It was enlightening for the children to see that their small actions (in preparing the bags) had such a huge and positive impact on the homeless people in our local area.

Judaism Week (November 2015) (46 images)

As part of our RE curriculum, we learn about a different World Faith each term. Last week, we learnt all about the Jewish faith in our lessons. We were lucky to have Ruth Jampel with us, from ‘Judaism for Schools’, who helped us to deepen our understanding of the Jewish faith. Ruth led two assemblies with Reception/KS1 and then KS2, in which she spoke about the Torah (the Holy Jewish Text), how a Torah is made, where is it kept and how is it treated. Some of our children had the chance to handle scrolls and prayer shawls and listen to beautiful Jewish music. Ruth then led a series of interactive workshops for each class, based on Hanukkah (the Jewish Festival of Lights), Shabbat (The Jewish Day of Rest), the Torah and Bar Mitzvah and Bat Mitzvah. All of the children enjoyed this hands on learning experience and really valued finding out more about another faith. They particularly enjoyed identifying the similarities and differences between Judaism and our Catholic faith. Throughout the week, we also arranged for classes to visit Muswell Hill Synagogue to take part in a guided tour of the building, followed by a short presentation about Judaism. The children behave immaculately and gained such a wonderful insight into the religion. The week proved to be very successful in helping our children to deepen their understanding of the key principles of other religions and to respect the faiths of people within our diverse community.

Remembrance Day (November 2015) (20 images)

On Wednesday 11th November, children, staff and parents from Years 2 and 3 visited the Wood Green War Memorial to pay their respects to all of the service men and women who have given their lives serving their country in wartime. We gathered at the War Memorial to say some prayers and read some very special war poetry. At 11 o'clock, two officers of the Royal British Legion led us all in two minutes silence. This was observed immaculately. One of the officers raised the Union Jack during the silence - which was incredibly poignant and very moving. Once the two minute silence was finished, children from each class lay their specially made poppy wreathes by the War Memorial and we all said a final prayer. Back at St. Paul's, the rest of the classes marked the two minute silence in the playground as a school community. Once the two minute silence had been observed, Miss Cheater played a beautiful rendition of 'The Last Post' on the trumpet. To end our day of remembrance, Year 5 children presented their wonderful class assembly to the rest of the school. The assembly showed us all why it is so very important to remember all of those who have given their lives for their country. Thank you to everyone for making the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 2015 so special at St. Paul's Catholic Primary School. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
